Apply and be accepted into the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)

As a foreign student, one thing you need to make sure of is selecting schools that are approved by the SEVP. Making the SEVP approves sure your university of interest is important as it determines the validity of your degree and certificate.

Only approved universities by the SEVP can enroll you into the SEVIS program after which you can then apply for a student visa.

The easiest way to find out which universities are approved, you can check the government websites for approved universities.

Once you have found the one you want you can then apply for a degree to study at the University. Note, that the admission process is quite different from a student visa process.

Before you can apply for a student visa, you have to have gotten admission into an American University. Once you have gotten admitted, your university would then enroll you into the SEVIS program.

You will be sent SEVIS-generated documents, the I-20 form if you are eligible for the M visa, or From DS-2019 if you are eligible for the J visa.

Pay the Student and Information System fee (SEVIS)

In other to pay the SEVIS form, you would need to file an online or paper form. This must all be done at least 3 days prior to submitting your application. These forms can be accessed through the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement website.

The SEVIS fee is about $200 for M visa holders and about $180 for J visa holders at the time of releasing this article.

After paying the SEVIS fee, you can return to the website to check on your payment status. Another way this can be done is by getting your sponsor to pay for you. If you are going the route of using a sponsor to get your student visa, this should be the case.

After checking the payment status on the website, you can then print the payment confirmation document from the website which would be required of you later on.

Complete an American Student Visa application form

This application form would be made available to you once you visit the U.S. Embassy after paying your SEVIS fee.

Applying early and completing the visa application form is very important as it could take up to 120 days to get approved.

Information needed to complete the visa application form can be seen below:

  • SEVIS ID and university address

Knowing this beforehand would help you adequately fill the form without any errors. After you have filled the form, you would need to electronically sign the form by clicking the “Sign Application” button.

You would be sent a confirmation message with a bar code and ID application number which you would need to take to your visa interview.

Pay the application fee

The visa application fee, often referred to as Machine Readable Visa (MRV), is a non0refundable fee you would pay. You can do this either by person, by phone, or online.

This step is important as you would be asked for the receipt when you get to the visa interview center.

Schedule and attend the visa interview

The final step is attending the visa interview. This can be done either online or through the phone. You cannot receive an American student visa until you have completed this process.

You would meet with a consular officer that would interview you. Documents required for the interview are:

  • Passport
  • Signed SEVIS form
  • SEVIS receipt
  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • MRV fee payment
  • A printed copy of the visa interview appointment letter
  • Transcripts
  • Scores from all tests taken (IELTS, GMAT,TOEFL)
