Black Panther is a 2018 American superhero movie based on the Marvel Comics character. The movie is a production of Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures is in charge of its distribution.


Black Panther is the eighteenth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe(MCU). The director of the film is Ryan Coogler, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Robert Cole. The story is centered on Tchalla returning home as king of Wakanda but finds his leadership challenged by a longtime adversary.


Wesley Snipes showed interest in making a Black Panther film in 1992 but the project did not come to fruition. In September 2005, Marvel Studios announced a Black Panther movie as one often based on Marvel Characters and distributed by Paramount Pictures. Chadwick Boseman made his first appearance as the character in Captain America: Civil War(2016). In 2016, Ryan Coogler and Robert Cole joined, the additional cast joined in May making it the first Marvel film with a predominantly black cast.

Black Panther Cast

Chadwick Boseman as Tchalla/Black Panther: The king of the African nation of Wakanda, who gains enhanced strength by ingesting the Heart Shaped Herb. After the death of his father Tchaka, Tchalla is in mourning while ascending the throne.He signed a five movie contract with Marvel Studios. Ashton Tyler played the role of young Tchalla.

Micheal B. Jordan as Njadaka/Erik “Killmonger” Stevens: The song of Njobu and a U.S black soldier seeking to overthrow Tchalla.Killmonger’s ritualistic tribal markings on his chest and torso resemble the scar tattoos of the Mursi and Surma tribes.

Lupita Nyongo as Nakia: Tchalla’s former lover and a Warlord.She is an undercover spy for Wakanda placed in other countries to complete missions.She is from the River Tribe. Nyongo called Nakia a departure from her comic counterpart. She starts the movie fighting to liberate enslaved women in Nigeria. Lupita Nyongo learned how to speak Hausa and she was also trained in Judo, Jujitsu, and Filipino martial arts.

Danai Gurira as Okoye: The head of the Dora Milaje, an extremely proud traditionalist from Wakanda. The Dora Milaje is an all-female special force of Wakanda, serving as Tchalla’s bodyguards.

Angela Bassett as Ramonda: Tchalla and Shuri’s mother and the Queen mother of Wakanda. Bassett wore a silver, waist length wig for the role that was made from 120 pieces of hair hand rolled into dreadlocks.

Forest Whitaker as Zuri: An elder statesman in Wakanda and the keeper of the heart-shaped herb.The character is seen as the Obi Wan-Kenobi of Black Panther.Denzel Whitaker plays the role of young Zuri.

Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue: A South African black market arms dealer, smuggler, and gangster.Forms an alliance with Killmonger. He adopts a piece of advanced Wakandan mining equipment as a sonic disruptor arm cannon, replacing his left arm which he lost.

Winston Duke as Mbaku: A Ruthless warrior who is the leader of Wakanda’s mountain tribe, the Jabari, who are in protest to Tchalla being the new king.

Martin Freeman as Everett K.Ross: A member of the CIA and former liaison of its joint Counter-Terrorism Task Force.

Daniel Kaluuya as WKabi: A confidant to Tchalla and his best friend who is the head of security for the Border Tribe serving as the first line of defense for Wakanda.

Letitia Wright as Shuri: Tchalla’s 16-year-old sister and the princess of Wakanda who designs new technology for the country.

Black Panther Music

Ludwig Goransson was hired to compose the film’s score by April 2017. Goransson traveled to South Africa and Senegal to record local musicians to form the base of his soundtrack. Kendrick Lamar produced the film’s curated soundtrack, Black Panther: The Album. The director chose Lamar for the project because his artistic themes align with those we explore in the film.

Black Panther Release

Black Panther had its world premiere at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on January 29,2018. The premiere featured a purple carpet that was flanked by women dressed as the Dora Milaje and was lit by futuristic lamps.

The cast members and other guests wore the African clothing to honor the African roots of the film. Black Panther was released in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and Taiwan on February 13, 2018. It debuted in South Korea on February 14, 2018, and the United States on February 16, 2018.

Box Office

As of February 27, 2018, Black Panther set a new worldwide record in its opening weekend as the 15th largest of all time. It is the ninth highest grossing MCU film internationally and the third highest grossing MCU film domestically.

However, it is the fastest Marvel film to reach the 50 million mark. The movie received critical acclaim with praises directed towards its visuals, screenplay, and characters. It also applauded for its direction, costume design, soundtrack, action sequences, and performances.

However, it is considered as one of the best movies set in the MCU and noted its cultural significance. Black panther grossed over $748 million worldwide making it the highest grossing film of 2018. The film has broken and set records as well as the biggest debut by an African American director.
