This film is based on Gregory Neri’s 2009 Young adult novel Ghetto Cowboy. This follows Cole as he starts to understand what it really means to be an urban cowboy. Whereas, also learning exactly what it takes to be a cool person.

Netflix Concrete Cowboy was set to have its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in September 2020. Prior to the cancellation due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In October 2020, Netflix gained distribution rights to the film for a release in 2021.
