Rocketman is an upcoming 2019 musical-drama film based on the life of musician Elton John. This movie is directed by  Dexter Fletcher and written by Lee Hall.

The movie is titled after John’s 1972 song “Rocket Man”. It also stars are Taron Egerton as John, with Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Production Development

It was first announced in January 2012 that Elton John was developing a biopic of himself. Justin Timberlake first tipped as his top choice to play the Controversial music genius in the film. In March 2013, Michael Gracey was then tasked to direct, and Tom Hardy cast in October to play John while Focus Features got U.S. distribution rights.

Plans for the movie was initially slated for 2014 until a halt till July 2017 that sees Tom Hardy replays with Taron Egerton. It was also reported that Egerton would sing the songs in the film himself. In an interview at CinemaCon, Egerton revealed that movie would be more of a fantasy-musical as instead of a straightforward biopic.


In April 2018, when the cast the cast revealed Taron Egerton as Elton John. Egerton had previously appeared with John in the 2017 film Kingsman: The Golden Circle.


Production commenced on 2 August 2018. Also in October 2018, it was announced the film was shooting in London. Filming commenced at Bray Film Studios near Maidenhead, Berkshire.

The LPs used in the film came from Eel Pie Records, a vinyl record store in Twickenham, London.
