You is Netflix’s popular thriller series about the obsessive and dangerous Joe Goldberg, and while it falls squarely into the guilty pleasure category of the streamer’s original programming, its success is deserved. The show is known for its jaw-dropping shocks, but also for its meticulous characterization, which keeps the spectator invested in the protagonist.
This third season has been a long time coming, arriving nearly two years after the conclusion of season 2. We would see Joe adjusting to fatherhood, among other changes in his life. Netflix has confirmed that You Season 3 release date would be on October 15, 2021.
We received a slew of new You season 3 cast announcements in November 2020. (see all their character backgrounds at Variety). The core cast, which includes the 13 new additions, the new cast members they’ll join, and the returning faces, is as follows:
- Penn Badgely: Joe
- Victoria Pedretti: Love
- Scott Speedman: Matthew
- Travis Van Winkle: Cary
- Shalita Grant: Sherry
- Saffron Burrows: Dottie
- Dylan Arnold: Theo
- Tati Gabrielle: Marienne
- Michaela McManus: Natalie
- Shannon Chan-Kent: Kiki
- Ben Mehl: Dante
- Chris O’Shea: Andrew
- Christopher Sean: Brandon
- Bryan Safi: Jackson
- Mackenzie Astin: Gil
- Ayelet Zurer: Dr. Chandra
- Jack Fisher: Young Joe Goldberg
- Mauricio Lara: Friend of Young Joe
In 2020, we learned of two returning cast members: Badgley will reprise his role as Joe, while Victoria Pedretti will reprise her role as Love. Given how season 2 concluded, with the couple in an unholy union, the couple’s ongoing presence in Joe’s life seemed a foregone conclusion (more on what that twist means for season 3 below). Hopefully, we’ll also see the return of Quinn’s extended family and friends from season 2.
New Cast Members
Additionally, we’ll be introduced to a fresh face in the form of Scott Speedman. Reports say that “Speedman will portray Matthew, a successful entrepreneur, spouse, and obnoxious father. He is guarded, secretive at times, and aloof, all of which conceal a deep depth of feeling beneath.”
Speedman joins fellow newcomers Travis Van Winkle and Shalita Grant on the cast. Grant will portray Sherry, a cruel girl who fears Love and poses as a friendly ‘Momfluencer’. Van Winkle will take on the persona of Cary, a wealthy and endearing “Master of Self-Optimization.” With Cary and Matthew in the picture, Joe now has increased competition in the eligible bachelor category.
You Season 3: Story
Season 2 of You amplified the melodrama significantly, departing from the books with a really surprising character reveal. When Joe’s first victim, Candace, forces Love to confront Joe’s true character, she responds in a way nobody expected by stabbing Candace in the throat.
It was a jaw-dropping moment that revealed Love is just as compulsive and prone to murder as Joe is. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Badgley discusses the show’s exploration of gender politics through Joe’s rejection of his partner’s darker instincts.
“it’s as if he’s saying, ‘OK, they’re the same theoretically – but then he rejects her, which brings up the archetypes of man and woman and the oppression of women, the inequity of men and women,” Badgley explains. He continues by implying that season three will take a closer look at Love, saying that she “does not appear to be the same sort of person, she does not appear to be the same kind of predator.”
You Season 3 Review
You Season 3 intends to delve deeper into more than just Love. Sera Gamble, the show’s creator, has grim plans for Joe as well. Gamble discussed how the season 2 finale does not bode well for our protagonist in an interview.
In the aftermath of Love’s murderous confessions. She also surprises Joe by revealing that she is now pregnant with his child, cementing her future with him. We watch the two relocate to the suburbs accompanied by Love’s mother. And it is here that Joe observes his new neighbor over the fence – a probable new target for his obsessive tendencies.
“I believe the most significant aspect of that final scene is that it confirms that Joe is still Joe,” Gamble says, “in a way that is not going to be beneficial to Joe.” What motivates Joe, and how this affects our reactions to his actions, was obviously Gamble’s ambition for season two, which included an in-depth examination of both Joe and Love’s terrible childhoods. Despite their disparate backgrounds, we learn that both protagonists endured physical and emotional abuse as well as committed acts of violence at a very young age.
The conclusion was written to set the stage for “a lot more suburban, insular society in which Joe would be completely out of place.” Joe’s approach to parenthood will be an intriguing aspect of the upcoming season – the previous two seasons have established that he is extremely protective of the youngsters in his life. The trailer really emphasizes that point as well.
